Earlier this year I had the privilege of composing a fanfare for the Royal College of Music's Graduation Ceremonies, which is where I study. The background noise you may hear are footsteps and rustling from when the platform party were leaving the stage, as this was a 'recessional' (I.e. at the end of the ceremony) fanfare. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and in the hour of our death. Amen. The Ave Maria or “Hail Mary” is a traditional Christian prayer addressing Mary, the mother of Christ. Jack Ledger-Dowse’s Ave Maria is a rich and meditative setting of the text for choir. It seeks to convey the mystical and other-worldly qualities of the text through its rich harmonic language, with moments of real intensity and others of tranquil spaciousness. The piece was originally conceived in early 2021, with a previous version for male voices being premiered by Portsmouth Cathedral Choir in June 2021. Since, it has been revitalised, in places reworked and scaled up to a full SATB choir.

This piece depicts the sadness, stress and overwhelming loneliness endured by Pascoe as he faces two 􏰁res at once. Not only is he at the centre of a media storm surrounding alleged dubiousness about his indigenous heritage, but he is trying to defend his come against wildfires which engulfed his home province of East Gippsland in 2019. He is alone, against the fire. This piece was premiered on December 3rd, 2020 by Jerome Ness at the Royal College of Music, London as part of the Head On! Photo Festival Project.
